While I love the books I teach--thank goodness...but hey, I got to choose them--my students don't. Much to my dismay, many of them entered my class declaring, "I hate reading!" And though I am passionate about these texts in their entirety and what they mean to great literature, my students don't necessarily see it that way. Instead, I have learned, that teaching a text can be a successful endeavor if a student is able to take something away from the book that they can apply to their own lives. While they may hate the style of writing, hate the characters, and still not like the actual process of reading, if they take away one thing from the novel that proves it has had an impact on their thinking in some way--I feel as if I've done my job.
